Finger Lakes

Finger Lakes is a wine region located in upstate New York, United States, recognised as one of the country’s leading areas for cool-climate viticulture.[1] The name refers to a series of long, narrow glacial lakes which exert a moderating influence on the regional climate. The area is best known for its aromatic white wines, particularly Riesling, though a wide range of varieties are cultivated.

Background

Viticulture in the Finger Lakes dates back to the early 19th century, with settlers planting native grapes and later French-American hybrids.[2] The region was heavily affected by Prohibition (1920–1933), which led to the decline of many vineyards. A revival began in the mid-20th century with the establishment of experimental plantings and the promotion of European vinifera varieties, spearheaded by growers and researchers who demonstrated that grapes such as Riesling and Chardonnay could thrive in the cool conditions.[3]

Geography and Climate

The Finger Lakes are deep glacial lakes that act as natural heat reservoirs, storing warmth in summer and releasing it during autumn and winter.[4] This effect reduces frost risk and extends the growing season, enabling the cultivation of delicate grape varieties. The soils, largely a mix of glacial deposits and shale, contribute to good drainage and influence vine vigour and fruit character. The cool climate favours slow ripening, resulting in wines with pronounced acidity and aromatic intensity.

Grape Varieties and Styles

The region is most renowned for its Riesling, which often shows a balance of freshness, minerality, and expressive fruit character.[5] Other notable white varieties include Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay, while red varieties such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc have gained recognition in recent decades. French-American hybrids, once dominant, remain in production, especially for local consumption. Winemaking styles range from dry and off-dry whites to sparkling and ice wines, which take advantage of the cold winters.

Wine Industry and Recognition

The Finger Lakes region has been designated as an American Viticultural Area (AVA), with sub-AVAs including Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake.[6] The wine industry is characterised by small, family-run wineries and a growing focus on quality and regional identity. Tourism plays a significant role, with wine trails around the lakes attracting visitors. Internationally, Finger Lakes Riesling has achieved critical acclaim, helping to establish the region’s reputation as a leading cool-climate wine producer in North America.
