Coteaux du Layon

From Vinopedia

Coteaux du Layon is an AOC in the Loire Valley of western France, dedicated exclusively to sweet white wines produced from Chenin Blanc. The appellation is recognised for wines made from late-harvested grapes, often affected by noble rot, resulting in wines of notable concentration, acidity and ageing potential.[1]

Geographic context

Coteaux du Layon is situated south of the Loire River, following the course of the Layon tributary in the Anjou district. Vineyards occupy gently sloping hillsides with favourable exposure that promotes prolonged ripening and the development of botrytis under suitable autumn conditions.[2]

The region experiences a temperate climate moderated by Atlantic influence, with misty mornings along the river valleys encouraging noble rot, followed by dry afternoons that limit destructive grey rot.[3]

Grape variety

Chenin Blanc is the sole authorised grape variety for Coteaux du Layon. Its naturally high acidity and susceptibility to botrytis make it particularly well suited to the production of sweet wines that retain freshness and structural balance even at high sugar levels.[4]

Winemaking and style

Wines of Coteaux du Layon are produced from selectively harvested grapes, often picked in multiple passes through the vineyard to capture optimal levels of ripeness and botrytisation.[5] Fermentation may be slow or interrupted naturally due to high sugar concentrations, resulting in wines with residual sweetness balanced by acidity.

Typical styles range from moderately sweet to lusciously rich, with aromas of honey, quince, apricot and dried fruit, often developing complex tertiary notes with bottle ageing.[6]

Appellation structure

The AOC includes several recognised communal designations, such as Quarts de Chaume, Bonnezeaux and Chaume, which are subject to stricter production criteria and generally represent the most concentrated expressions of the Layon valley.[7]

Ageing potential

Thanks to high acidity and sugar concentration, Coteaux du Layon wines are capable of extended ageing. Over time, primary fruit characters evolve into notes of caramel, spice and dried citrus, while texture becomes more integrated and silky.[8]

Global context

Within the [[Loire Valley]], Coteaux du Layon represents one of the most important benchmarks for botrytised Chenin Blanc, alongside Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire. Internationally, it is often compared with other noble rot wines, though its stylistic identity remains distinct due to Chenin Blanc’s acidity and regional conditions.[9]
